With the imminent closure of the Wii U eShop, it's high time I told you about two of that system's best games. (And they both happen to be from the same developer, NapNok Games.) Get 'em fast—they weren't big sellers, and they were built specifically around Wii U's quirky features, so don't expect them to ever find their way to any other platform. But first...

Game of the Week

Two new games climb into the #JakeReviewsItch top five this week. Will the crown go to casual, party-game mayhem or complex, methodical strategy?

Game of the Week

2d flight simulator looks terrible, sounds terrible, and barely functions. By almost any metric, it's much, much worse than this week's other games, and that's why I've found myself thinking of it fondly over the last few days.

by LUXI

Genre: Action, Adventure, Shooter

Pitch: A short, stylish, abstract, nonviolent first-person shooter that doesn't have much to offer beyond its aesthetic.

My expectations:

Don't know a thing about it. It looks wonderfully garish. I didn't read the description, but I did spot the words "game jam," which makes me think there won't be much here.

Review:

Yep, this sure is a game jam game. I’m sure it was a thrill to put this together in a day. As someone who didn’t attend this jam and doesn’t know these people—someone who is just playing a game—I can only share so much of that joy.

// Down to Earth // consists of three or four levels, and they’re all basically the same. I finished in about ten minutes, although I was ready to quit after the first minute. The only thing I gained by sticking it out was certainty that, yeah, my first impression was completely accurate.

You’re dropped in a small, 3D arena of houses, rainbows, and featureless blocks. Flat, pixelated cat heads glide straight toward you. You lose health if they touch you. They lose health if you say, “Pew!” and lob bouncy hearts at them. Wander and jump until you reach a hidden portal. Repeat.

The magenta-soaked combination of chunky bitmaps and Unreal Engine lighting and shaders is stylin’, and anyone looking for lo-fi hip-hop beats to relax/study to needs to hear this soundtrack, but even the style feels tired after that first minute.

I’m happy for LUXI, but this is barely a game.

+ Looks fresh + Hot tunes + Easy to understand

– No substance – Almost impossible to tell if an enemy is behind you – Some of the platforming is rotten – Throws everything it has at you from the start and never introduces another new idea
