January 2023 Game Awards

Around here, the start of a new month brings an important tradition that I'm making up right now: Stealing game award categories from old magazines or Web sites, and then giving those awards to the Itch.io games I reviewed over the last month. I think it's going to be a very hot feature.

This month's plagiarism is brought to you by the 2001 Nintendo Power Awards (minus platform-specific categories like "Best Nintendo GameCube Graphics"), found in volume 156, pages 116-123.

Genre: Adventure

Pitch: Snake as a compact, atmospheric action/adventure game. As the developers put it, "Snakevania."

My expectations: I felt my chest deflate when I remembered there was another 10mg joint awaiting me this morning. However, SNAAAK comes from an entirely different development team than Sealed Estate, so I'm lifting my chin and hoping for a redemption story.

Genre: Adventure

Pitch: A complete survival-horror adventure in just 10 minutes.

My expectations: The short length seems to be the top selling point. The screenshots instantly bring WarioWare to mind. Will this be a highly intentional, laser-focused experience, or am I about to play something that was thrown together with no ambition? I sure hope it's the former, because either way, I have a date with another 10mg game tomorrow.

[4/25: Phew! I've cleaned up the broken links and the clutter on the name and rating pages. Now to get genre sorting back in shape. Should be done by the end of the week.] Genres on this page, alphabetically: Action / Adventure / Card Game / Educational / Fighting / Interactive Fiction / Platformer / Puzzle / Rhythm
