February 2023 Game Awards

Like a lion, March is here, and that means it's time to celebrate Itch.io games I reviewed in February using award categories stolen from another publication. As is tradition. This month, our template comes from the latest issue of Game Informer (Vol. XXXIII / No. 2 / Issue 353; Resident Evil 4 remake on the cover), mostly because I idly flipped open a copy last week and landed on the "Best Dork" category.

2/12/23 - Week In Review

This week's reviews:

🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 a new life. 🧡🤍🤍🤍🤍 A NIGHTMARE'S TRIP 🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 A Normal Lost Phone 🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 A Planet of Mine 🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 A Short Hike 🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 A Sketchbook About Her Sun 🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 A Snake's Tale Later in this post, we're going deep Nintendo news and capitalism:

  • The return of the Touch Generation
  • Freshly Announced Zelda's Pricey Rupeeland
  • The relative value of old games But first...

Game of the Week:

Without a doubt, this is the strongest week so far. There's a clear winner in this batch (as well as a clear loser), but the runners-up have been on my mind a lot over the last few days.

The Puzzle/Podcast Principle

First identified in A Snake's Tale, the Puzzle/Podcast Principle states that in the era of casual puzzle games designed primarily to be played on phones and tablets, distraction is an essential part of the intended experience. Giving such a game one's undivided attention, therefore, can be ruinous to enjoyment and engagement. PC and console games are more likely to ask for focus, which can be a big problem if you've unknowingly downloaded a mobile port. So next time you fire up a game (of any genre) that feels like it should tick all your boxes, but it's just not clicking, hit that mute button and listen to your imaginary friends talk to each other. And remember: The most important part of any para-social relationship is YOU.

#JakeReviewsItch by Genre

Every review from #JakeReviewsItch, sorted by genre and arranged alphabetically. Genres provided by developers/publishers on Itch.io. A lot of developers/publishers seem very confused about what kind of game they've made. You can also sort by name or rating.

[4/25: Phew! I've cleaned up the broken links and the clutter on the name and rating pages. Now to get genre sorting back in shape. Should be done by the end of the week.] Genres on this page, alphabetically: Action / Adventure / Card Game / Educational / Fighting / Interactive Fiction / Platformer / Puzzle / Rhythm

See Page 2 for: Role Playing / Shooter / Simulation / Strategy / Visual Novel / N/A (No genre tag)
