March 2023 Game Awards

You know how this works: Every day, I review an Itch.io game, and on the first day of each month, I give prestigious awards to the previous month's games. There is no reason we need to acknowledge that I've been on hiatus for more than two weeks. We can just pretend that everything is normal. This month's award categories come courtesy of Steve Kim, whose Tweet was the first hit when I Googled, "1 like = 1 game". Thanks, Steve! He also has a long-abandoned Tumblog, which is pretty fun if you want some silly goofs about things that were happening on Giant Bomb 5+ years ago.

Week In Review - 3/12/23

It's a week of messes! Steam is a mess! I am a mess! Even the Game of the Week is a mess!

Game of the Week

All You Can Eat is easily the best game I reviewed this week. Alt-Frequencies is the clear runner-up. Game of the Week, however, is a title that goes to the game that's still occupying my brain after the fact...

Price (US): $1.99

Included In: Bundle for Racial Equality and Justice

Genre: Adventure

Pitch: A man who has been living in a diner for the past 10 years to get the most out of his all-you-can-eat meal must emerge when a shady corporation forces the establishment into foreclosure. A point-'n'-click adventure presented as a three-panel comic.

My expectations: An adventure game set in a newspaper comic strip? Yes, please!

Genre: Visual Novel

Pitch: The physical embodiment of a nightmare, now a young adult who's outgrown his scary ways, takes a trip to a cross-dimensional city to relax, buy anime merchandise, and make friends along the way.

My expectations: I played an exceptionally good visual novel yesterday. This looks like a big step down. It's unfair to compare the two, and I'll do my best to judge this game on its own merits, but lets not kid ourselves: There's no such thing as an "objective" review. My thoughts will be tinged by that bias.

Genre: Puzzle

Pitch: A casual, tile-based puzzle game. Safely guide Little Red Riding Hood to Grandmother's house in the fewest moves possible.

My expectations: From the title, I was expecting some sort of Night In the Woods homage. I'm way more interested in a fairy tale puzzle game with an art style. The hex-grid, board game thing brings Settles of Catan to mind, which doesn't appeal to me in the least, but I'm feeling hopeful.

Genre: Adventure

Pitch: Snake as a compact, atmospheric action/adventure game. As the developers put it, "Snakevania."

My expectations: I felt my chest deflate when I remembered there was another 10mg joint awaiting me this morning. However, SNAAAK comes from an entirely different development team than Sealed Estate, so I'm lifting my chin and hoping for a redemption story.

1/8/23 - Week In Review

This week's reviews: 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 // Down to Earth // 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 2d flight simulator 🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 2 9 0 1 / / FREELANCER 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 4-LEGGED-HEROINE

Game of the Week

2d flight simulator looks terrible, sounds terrible, and barely functions. By almost any metric, it's much, much worse than this week's other games, and that's why I've found myself thinking of it fondly over the last few days.

[4/25: Phew! I've cleaned up the broken links and the clutter on the name and rating pages. Now to get genre sorting back in shape. Should be done by the end of the week.] Genres on this page, alphabetically: Action / Adventure / Card Game / Educational / Fighting / Interactive Fiction / Platformer / Puzzle / Rhythm
