i'm so confused rn, can you explain the goncharov thing?? i get off tumblr for five minutes

(This post will be kept pinned & periodically updated until 28 Nov)

Lmaoooo

Nah I getchu. So this post has been circulating for like a year:

But yesterday, it had inspired someone to do this:

Meta analysis. So many fake meta essays. Disturbingly good ones. And of course the memes. (Edit: HAVE I SAID THIS SHIT IS DISTURBING)

As you can see, the myth just started to grow, characters and ships and tropes being added one after the other, almost bizzarely without contradiction, until there was enough of shape to the whole thing for people to start posting fanfic about it on AO3. "No beta we die like ice-pick Joe" is already a tag.

It was hilarious in the beginning, but the way it's developed within less than a day, kind of like it's being willed into existence, is freaking me out a bit. We're toying with powers beyond our comprehension. 😂😂😂

Of course, there could be an ulterior motive as well.

Edit: guys, please tag these posts "unreality" so people with disassociation issues can filter them out (not this one, this is an explainer). <3

----------------------------------------------

Edit 2: Aparently the boots in the original post are actually referring to a movie called Gomorrah that came out in 2008, directed by Mateo Garrone, based on the Scampia Feud. And other people had also been making posts about the fake movie for a while before the poster took off.

Edit 4: Alt text added to all images courtesy of @valentineish ❤️

Edit 5: Turns out tumblr has done this kind of thing before. Nine years in this hell place and I had to have "Squiddles" and penis smp explained in the replies.

Edit 7: Lynda Carter (real one)/ earns more/ Tumblr cred.

----------------------------------------------

I made this post 18 hours after the movie poster went up. Closed edits 27 hours after first posting. So all of the above happened within 45 hours of the movie poster going up.

As of closing on Day 3 there are 371 works in the AO3 tag.

-----

Updating with Day 3 shenanigans I missed yesterday:

Edit 16: Ethics of Gonchposting

(alt text included)

End of Day 4 there are now 485 works in the Goncharov tag on AO3

----

Didn't get to update this on Day 5, so these are the Day 5 doings:

More trailers!

I also just found out about the Goncharov Game Jam.

It appears this opened a day after after the meme took off.

Goncharov was first entered into Wikipedia between Day 4 and 5 (attempts to vandalise it with fake info don't count, incidentally – please knock that shit off) under List of Internet Phenomena. This was then expanded into its own Wikipedia page at the end of Day 5 because, according to the talk history: "the topic now meets the notability threshold for its own artice due to significant coverage in The New York Times and other sources cited." We're on Wikipedia, people!

And then we made The Guardian half a day later. So while the meme is definitely dying down to embers by now, it still stays winning.

YouTube channels with episodes on the meme:

End of Day of 5 there were 511 works on AO3, and End of Day 6 (today) there are 556.

🚨BREAKING 🚨 from Martin Scorsese's daughter's TikTok (real actual)

tw: unreality:

We did it you guys!

Clarification: Francesca Scorcese asked her Dad about the meme and Martin played along. Please reblog this PSA to help Tumblr people with psychosis. Thanks.

Hey, I’d just like to add a link to a really insightful and informative piece written by someone who both personally and professionally understands psychosis, which hopefully will help explain why some parts of this post don’t sit well with some of us who experience being untethered to reality on a regular basis. (:

So @hussyknee tagged me in on responding to this reblog because I happen to also have a degree in psychology - a terminal one, in fact, I got my PhD a couple of years ago.

I generally do agree with the OP of the post linked above. The grand old Tumblr tradition of internet peer pressure for a "good cause" can be immensely and horrendously damaging to people who are mentally ill and traumatised. It is genuinely imperative to extend all possible grace to other people on this clownsite. Because most of us are at least a little bit fucked up and the impact we can have is often disproportionate to the actual words we say on here.

It is my understanding that the "tag as unreality" request comes directly from people who have psychosis who have been triggered and distressed by the Goncharovia that has taken hold of Tumblr. When people who suffer from a debilitating and immensely distressing psychiatric disorder ask to be accommodated, it is deeply unkind to refuse to do it. I generally don't tag my posts and I have zero interest in Goncharovia so I haven't needed to think about the tagging, but if I did reblog something I would, because it's just the kind thing to do.

It is also deeply unkind to harass folks who have not tagged their posts as the Great Tumblr Consensus has decreed they must, for whatever reason. At most drop people a kind reminder, and then let them be. You do not need to amplify them or get on their case or tell the entire internet they are an ableist asshole - which they probably aren't! most people are ableist out of ignorance/lack of critical reflection! - because they didn't use the specific tag you saw someone else whose post they may not have even seen request.

And with all due respect to the OP's education and lived experience - their experiences and their understanding of their disorder do not negate the needs and requests of other people who also have the same disorder. They make some very valid points, and tagging or not tagging is an individual choice, but let's not dismiss other people's needs because their requests for accomodation do not fit with our own experience or understanding.

Hey, just in case people who already have been having a bad time with this meme are retriggered by Francesca Scorcese's TikTok – Goncharov is fake. Martin Scorsese's daughter is real, and that's her real TikTok account, and presumably that is really her father. But Martin is just being a good sport by rolling with it and admitting he made it. The link Francesca sent him is the NYT article clearly saying it's a fake movie.

PLEASE reblog this and DO NOT TAG IT UNREALITY. "Unreality" is for posts that are keeping up the bit, but info posts, reality-affirming posts and ones talking about the meme as a meme are solidly real. We really haven't been doing a good enough job tagging this properly and protecting neurodivergent people from being gaslit and traumatized. I've seen way too many people saying they nearly had a breakdown because of being lied to. We never meant to hurt you, and I'm so sorry people were jackasses when you wanted to know the truth.

(alt included)

No, I mean that people are having trouble figuring out what is real and what is fake. Even I didn't know Francesca existed, or that she was 23 and had a TikTok until people started floating the possibility of her seeing the meme. There are people in the gonchposts who didn't even know who Martin Scorsese is. If I had seen that TikTok with no context, I would have thought it was just more fake stuff, and then gotten confused when people insisted it was real. Seeing Martin Scorsese himself play along confirming he made the movie would play hell with a psychotic person's paranoia. So I'm explaining which part is real and which isn't. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.

Original post edited to read: "That is really Martin Scorsese's daughter, that's her real TikTok account, and presumably that is really her father in the chat screenshot she posted. Francesca saw the piece in the NY Times talking about how Tumblr made up a fake movie, sent her Dad the link and asked "Did you see this?" Martin joked back "yes I made that movie years ago." That's all it was, Martin Scorsese himself playing along with our silliness."

Maybe "Real meme fake movie" for the TikTok?

Yes that also works. "meme is real movie is fake" sounds clearer. But maybe also tag "unreality" for the people who have it blacklisted.

Edit: I love everybody reblogging this, but a handful of idiots have been clowning on this post so here's an explainer about how site-wide disinformation can trigger psychosis. Please go in the replies and notes, they have a lot of interesting insights, by everyone from non-psychotic autistic people with gaslighting trauma to DID systems. You can go through the notes on this post as well.

There's absolutely no reason to be ashamed of loving and enjoying this meme, or to feel bad about not tagging things properly when you didn't know how. And PLEASE don't harass, dogpile or shame people for failing to tag properly or choosing not to. You're just giving people anxiety and policing them. Do what you can how you can, be kind, and don't tell other people their business. That is more than enough.❤️

Why are these things dangerous to people’s mental health? Does not knowing if something is real or not cause them to go insane? Genuine question.

Avatar

There are some mental health issues in which a person may experience delusions or instances of derealization in which they either feel detached from reality, or actively hallucinate distressing scenarios which may prompt them to do things they wouldn't normally do.

I do not experience these things as part of my mental health disorders, so I cannot speak on their behalf. What I can try to explain to you is how I experienced psychotic symptoms from certain medications.

I was very detached from my physical sense of self, and did not realize I'd injured myself several times because I could not feel my body. I also suffered from distressing visual hallucinations out the corner of my eye, as well as terrifying dream-like states where I didn't know if i was awake or asleep. My sense of rising paranoia had me convinced I was being stalked and in danger, and my flight or fight instincts wanted me to run off and hide and not tell anyone where I was because I didn't know who I could trust. Hopefully you can see how dangerous that could be to a vulnerable person in an altered state.

Fortunately, I knew what was happening, and was able to come off the meds causing the issue fairly quickly. Others are not so lucky, and have to be vigilant about what could trigger an episode.

For some people, being gaslit or being made to doubt their perception of something--like whether a 1970s Gangster movie that suddenly Everyone is talking about as though it is real-- can be a destabilizing experience.

Obviously not everyone experiences these things the same way. Mental health issues are a spectrum.

But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be kind and mindful of others who do experience things this way, especially when they are expressing distress and requesting that people clarify things or, in the instance of Tumblr, tag them so that they can avoid them.

I hope that helps.

Also, if I got any of the language wrong, someone please correct me. This is not something I am as well versed in as other areas of mental health and I will gladly make corrections with apology where necessary.

Basically "there's something everyone sees that you are missing and it never quite makes sense and everyone assumes you know and it feels like you've slipped into a slightly different reality" is what paranoia can feel like.

Our brains gaslight us, and we already don't trust our memory and our perception. So we have to rely on the actions of others to tell what's normal and what's real, so if everyone around is saying X Happened but I don't remember it, why don't I remember it, can I trust any of my perceptions ???

And it all kinda spirals from there. A lot of these things - especially for me - is about a fixation on Figuring Out if Something is Real. And if my logic is telling me that it isn't, but everyone around me says it is and it's weird I don't think so, well. That can be upsetting, to say the least

Thank you for explaining that. I wasn't sure how to word that aspect of it. I appreciate it!

As someone who is disabled by physical and mental illnesses, I gotta say you are seriously overdoing it for thinking calling someone an imbecile, lame, midget, psycho, and/or spaz is ableist. You are way too obsessed with trying to not offend us and it makes you seem like you’re also obsessed with sounding woke.

See, this is what we call identity politics, which is the assumption that identity confers authority. And also?? I am also physically and mentally disabled?? What gave you the impression I wasn't? And if you think your identity makes you an authority, that mean you aren't a mobility impaired, developmentally disabled dwarf with psychosis and cerebral palsy? Because all the arguments and pleas against using those words came directly from the communities themselves. Obviously it's difficult to find a common consensus within any marginalized group, but listening to their reasons why they want or not want to be called things is still important. There's really no reason to be so married to using insults so specific to disabled individuals.

Also, having been in the community for years at the this point and following disability activists and as many points of view as I could find – psychotic people are the ones who have been pleading with non-psychotic people not to use the word. Speaking as someone who has done a stint in the psych ward myself, I also have a fairly visceral reaction to turning mental illness symptoms into a slur, and making mental illness into the wastebasket of human evil have a direct correlation to how we fucking end up dead.

"Sounding woke" oh my god fuck off 😂😂😂

why are psychotic ppl always the butt of jokes lmfao like i know why (its ableism) but seriously its not only annoying but also harmful to constantly see ppl who have “odd beliefs” or who “talk to inanimate objects” or smth as the weirdos who in the end somehow get “fixed” and end up “normal” and completely got “rid” of their quirks that were very clearly meant to represent psychosis even if no one ever said the word psychotic, or as the people who only get befriended out of pity and behind their back theyre still the butt of jokes even by their friends! were real people and yes were not neurotypical but we dont deserve to be made fun of for smth that we cant control! psychosis isnt funny n its not smth that can be “fixed” by simply realising “oh im odd i should probably be ‘normal’”, its a mental illness n yall preach acceptance of mental illnesses but as soon as someone starts to show psychosis symptoms (which half of yall dont even recognise) theyre suddenly “weird” and “creepy” and “need to get their sh*t together” n dont get accepted at all! its transparent af and yall need to step up in your acceptance n support

nonpsychotic ppl can boost this

There’s been a lot of discourse on “But you don’t LOOK mentally ill. I think you’re faking!”, “But I’m mentally ill, I’m allowed to treat my partner poorly sometimes!!”, and “Why are people mad about _inputArtist_ making stories about mental illness and tragedy?! Is nobody allowed to talk about those things anymore?!”

and I just wanted to draw out my opinions on the different issues, because it’s more fun to draw comics than make text posts
