I’ve never thought about Jason Todd having milky eyes before. It’s pretty common in fics for him to have unnaturally green eyes. But I just love love LOVE the idea of Jason giving off unnatural vibes. Like any citizen of Gotham could walk up to him and think “oh a normal young adult” but after 5 minutes they start noticing things. Like how slightly pale he looks, the scar poking out the top of his shirt, the far off look in his eyes, and “why is he wearing a leather jacket in the middle of summer”

He will live the rest of his life haunted by his own death. Not only Jason… but Bruce too. Every time he has to look into Jason’s eyes, Bruce is going to be reminded of his greatest failure.

suddenly struck with thoughts about the devastating concept of Jason Todd

because he was good. because he had a bleeding heart despite every reason not to. he loved school and was good at it. he was the first to be adopted, with little pretense of guardianship. he did everything he could to be a perfect Robin and live up to an impossible ideal. he only ever wanted Bruce and Dick to like him.

because he met Bruce in the same place and on the same day that Bruce's parents died--the single defining moment of Batman's existence. and he made Batman laugh. he hit the Dark Knight, Terror of Gotham, with a tire iron. he wasn't afraid of the man who turned fear into a weapon.

because he couldn't save his mother from herself, but he tried. because he was too good not to try and save the woman who gave him up. too good to play the Joker's game. the crowbar didn't kill him, the bomb did. he died knowing he wouldn't make it and tried anyway. he died a hero.

because other Robins have died, but none of them put an irrevocable tear in the mythos of Batman. because Jason Todd always dies, in every universe. he dies for the sins of his father. he was put to death by popular vote, sacrificed by the crowd. doomed by the narrative and doomed by the audience. the boy who only ever tried to prove he was good enough--wasn't good enough.

because he has every reason to be angry. because he didn't ask to be murdered, didn't ask to be brought back, and when he did everyone acted like he was better off dead. Bruce tried to kill him and nearly succeeded. he's blamed for his own death and blamed for his resurrection. he can never come home because the house is haunted by his own ghost.

because he's been the hero, the victim, and the villain. because his family and his writers and his universe don't know what to make of him. they don't know how to look his tragedy in the eye. and how can you?

it hurts to look at the hero who cannot be good enough, the victim who will only ever be angry, the villain who can sometimes be right. the audience hates to feel complicit and, in this exceptional case, they are.

Why Condiment King is the worst villain

Dick: Okay, you go out and didtract him, and I'll come in from the back to get him
Robin Jason: What? No! You distract him
Dick: It'll only be for a little bit.
Robin Jason: No
Dick: I did it when I was Robin
Robin Jason: Then you can do it again
Dick: You'll be fine, he's a D lister at best
Robin Jason: You know that's not the problem! I have school tomorrow, and I don't want to smell like ketchup for the whole day
Dick: [sighs] Alright, fine. Let's just settle this like professionals
Robin Jason: Fine
Dick and Jason: Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!
Robin Jason: [does rock]
Dick: [does paper]
Robin Jason: Ughhh, Fine
Dick: You got this buddy. I believe in you!
Robin Jason: [walking away and grumbling] I hate you
Dick: I love you too!

[Approximately 5 minutes later, with Condiment King tied up]
Dick: And that's what I call a success
Robin Jason: [covered in a disgusting mixture of ranch dressing, mustard, barbecue sauce, and ketchup] For you maybe
Dick: Hey, it could have been worse. He could have shot pickles or something at you
Robin Jason: Asshole
Robin Jason: [suddenly starts smirking] Hey, you know how you're always wanting to give me a hug? Well, I could really use a hug right now
[Dick and Jason lock eyes for a solid 10 seconds]
Dick: [bolts] I'm social distancing from little brothers right now!
Robin Jason: [running after him] Get back here you coward!
Dick: Go hug Batman! I have a date tonight!
Robin Jason: Batman's not! Hope your date likes ranch dressing!
[Dick and Jason continue to chase each other for the rest of patrol]
-
Condiment King: So am I just supposed to sit here until the cops show up??

Dick pushing thirty is forever funny to me. I imagine he pouts in the corner anytime Damien or Jason jokingly call him "old man"

Once during a particularly stressful mission he came back and took a shower only to notice a single grey hair amongst the black. He was basically that scene in howls moving castle where he threw himself on the nearest surface and wallowed until Kori had to reassure him he was still young.

He works on a mission with Bruce and is beaming when an officer comes up to him and he's expecting a "thanks kid" like the old days or maybe a "hey bro" in solidarity but the officer just shakes his hand and says "thank you sir"

Dick cries for a week.

So I'm someone who started out reading dc fanfic but is now starting to get into actual source material.

I just watched Under the Red Hood and holy crap Jason gets mischaracterized so much in fandom. Like I know a lot of people have talked about this already but whatever.

Jason, so often is described in fanfic as impulsive or emotional, as someone who "thinks with his fists" rather than his head, when that couldn't be further from the truth.

In UtRH, this guy is able to manipulate so many key players into ending up exactly where he wants him, and yet people are still think he's one of the dumber members of the batfamily.

TL;DR - jason is way smarter than the fandom gives him credit for. I'm definitely not the first to say this, but it's not said enough.
