“Ochako is just a great and selfless hero! ANY hero would make that offer in order to de-escalate the fight!” brother you are smoking straight crack rock if you think the Deku-Shigaraki or Dabi-Todorokis fights would’ve ended up that way. Deku would not offer to feed Shigaraki his blood for the rest of their lives because he is not gay gay homosexual gay in love with him the way my god these bitches gay good for them good for them Ochako is gay gay homosexual gay in love with Toga

Himiko Toga, who are you really? (The Queer Narrative Hypothesis-Act: Toga, Part I)

Oh Toga, Toga Toga Toga, that crazy yandere who is part of the League of Villains, who wants to date our main character pussy destroyer cool Midoriya competing with Ochako in the process/s

Okay, no. None of this is actually the truth, but still just like with Ochako everyone has been assuming three things about her and her role on the story:

  • The Yandere
  • “The other woman”
  • Making Deku realize Ochako's feelings for him.

These are the things people have thought or currently think about her, but I don’t think any of these points are actually real and just serve as baits, so let’s debunk each point shall we!

First of all yandere. This is a kind of Japanese character archetype usually used in manga, anime, video games and pop culture to describe one whose feelings of love and admiration lead to mental distress, possessiveness and obsessive attachment to their "only one"; "yandere" comes from "yanderu" (mentally sick) while "dere" comes from "deredere" (lovey-dovey), creating a whole personality type that is usually used as shocked value, on comedy for example, or as the main characteristic of the possible love interest. An apparently sweet character with sick thoughts to the point of attacking and killing out of jealousy.

Everyone directly assumed she was this kind of archetype because of her mannerism, her blood-based quirk, and fixation with love (along with being a girl and not ugly) but is this even actually true in the first place? Toga has been really vocal about her feelings and need for love and has many characteristics yanderes also share, but that doesn't make her like that; she doesn't act like "normal" yanderes, as she doesn't get jealous; the main and more remarkable part of yanderes, their violent jealousy against others and their love interest; this is what makes a yandere a yandere, their violent jealousy, something Toga hasn’t show at all, quite the opposite as she doesn't have an only love, and in fact loves many people. Toga is not obsessed with "that person" or Deku in this case, she is obsessed with love in general and is desperate to feel loved; violence means love for her, becoming the person (something she can only do with her quirk correctly if they do have some sort of connection, as I read) or people she loves, as is the only way she can feel close to them. When she attacks with the idea of hurting in a negative way, is because they are trying to stop her from loving or her heart was broken (after her biggest heartbreak, Jin’s death, her perception of love = violence changes as she feels personally hurt, making that association possibly breakable because of the contradiction it supposes).

She not only wants love, deep down she wants to be saved, she wants a kind smile and hands for her, but "knows" nobody will be there for her...

For her the moral questions of villainy or heroism dont matter not because “uwu Izuku is so cute”, but because her whole perspective revolves around her feelings and how badly someone hurts them personally, even if that means making generalizations (which btw is “the easy way” hate that phrase so much ugh in this and any context; generalizations are cognitive simplified schemas the brain can go to for quick solutions or answers, while also reassuring the previous ideas of the individual; this is how stereotypes of prejudices work, adding visual, auditive, imaginative among others stimulation, and/or emotions, memories, etc. to create a different reaction to that association. Keep this in mind, this will be also used in future posts)

She looks like a yandere. She has similar mannerism and fixations but that does not directly mean she is a yandere, she’s Toga Himiko.

Second of all, we get The Other Woman trope; she as the “other choice”, the competition and who represents a threat for Izuocha, as the only other girl who has ever show any kind of more than purely platonic feeling for him in canon, this is why she had to be this one… but that’s also not true. Again it looks like that, but she never stood a change in the first place (Deku doesn’t share nor have any kind of touching moment that would lead to the question of “as she actually has normal feelings and is just a poor girl, she could be a cool love interest”. No, instead she has a connection and moments with Ochako.

She’s not the other woman, Deku and Uraraka aren’t together in the first place in a romantic relationship, she loves BOTH of them (and Tsuyu too btw), Ochako doesn’t want her feelings to be revealed because she has been trying to just get over them…

And with this we get to the third point: she would be used for Ochako’s big reveal of feelings. That’s what everyone thought and assumed (again!) the moment it was clear she wasn’t a threat for Izuocha… then chapter 348 happened and…! Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Yeah she tried to reveal ochako’s feelings, but she wasn’t even shy or embarrassed about it, she just looked uncomfortable (“pls nononononono don’t say that I used to have a crush on him aghhhhghhh” like when your bestie jokingly teases who used to be your crush and now the idea is just ew vibes ksksk), and when she realized Toga was in love with her… this has to get played for their arcs for sure (is one of the things Ochako has been thinking about)…

Showing how she was hurt with Ochako instead of Deku to humanize her, having all of these tropes flipped up and becoming something different… again, defying expectations.

So… if she is not the yandere love interest that won’t be able to be picked because of Ochako, then what is she?

Let me propose this:

She is the link to queer love in the story while being disguised in plain sight. And this, is for the next part.

Stay tuned!

I’m gonna be completely honest, for a long time I thought that people saying Mina was pushing romantic feelings onto ochako was kinda fanon, but it’s not. And it’s very interesting to see this looking through everything with new eyes, because; this doesn’t have to work like a normal shonen anime. And I have to keep telling myself that over and over again. It just simply doesn’t have to work that way. And horikoshi has proven time and time again that he is not afraid of breaking the shell of what makes a shonen anime.

Also another user pointed out that Mina , arguably the character who pushes romantic feelings onto Uraraka the most , has also never actually been in love or had a crush herself despite wanting to - seems like Mina doesn't have a very reliable view on this topic 👀
