The Eurovision song contest is facing intense scrunity and accusations of discrimination after it rebuked Swedish-Palestinian pop star Eric Saade for wearing a Palestinian scarf in the opening act of the semi-finals. Saade, whose father is of Palestinian origin, kicked off the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden on Tuesday evening with a keffiyeh, a traditional Palestinian and Arab male headdress, wrapped around his wrist. [...] In response, the organisers of the contest, European Broadcasting Union (EBU) released a statement saying it "regretted" that Saade wore the scarf. "The Eurovision Song Contest is a live TV show. All performers are made aware of the rules of the contest, and we regret that Eric Saade chose to compromise the non-political nature of the event," it said. [...] Eurovision later posted clips of the performances of the other two opening acts on its social media pages, but did not share Saade’s, prompting social media users to share the performance on their personal pages to show support for the artist.

Waving Palestinian flags, wearing traditional Palestinian garments, or if we're being honest, just being Palestinian, is now officially "too political" for Eurovision.

Literally, all Saade did was wear a keffiyeh around his wrist—while being Palestinian—and that was enough to get a statement from the EBU, and have his opening performance scrubbed from Youtube.

If you're not already boycotting Eurovision this year, then what the fuck is wrong with you?

Below are two statements from Saade. The first one, giving his reason for participating, was posted a few days ago, and the other was in response to the EBU accusing him of 'compromising the non-political nature' of the Genocide Song Contest:

Reminder again to BOYCOTT EUROVISION 🇵🇸

[Image descriptions, partially adapted from alt text: 1. Photo of Saade singing in a dark leather jacket with a keffiyeh wrapped around the wrist holding the mic.

2. First.. This is a love message. When you are no longer able to wear a symbol of your ethnicity in our so-called ‘Free world, it is more important than ever for me to participate. EBU’s handling of Eurovision is disgraceful. They do not permit any Palestinian symbols inside the Arena, while symbols representing any other ethnicity in the world are welcomed. Their slogan ‘United by music’ (if you’re not Palestinian) is already a joke. By broadcasting Is*eli propaganda during prime time to the whole world, yet focusing on banning the Palestinian flag? Therefore, it is more crucial than ever for me to be present on [caps] that stage [end caps]. You may take our symbols, but you cannot take away my presience [heart with bandages emoji] Love u.

3. English. This was just my way of showing a part of my origin, which is important in a world like this. I got that keffiyeh from my dad when I was a little boy, to never forget where the family comes from. Back then, I didn’t know one day be called a ‘political symbol’ by EBU. It’s like calling the “Swedish Dola Horse” a political symbol… In my eyes, it’s just racism. I just wanted to be inclusive and wear something that is authentic to me – but the EBU seems to think my ethnicity is controversial. It says nothing about me, but everything about them. I’ll stick to this year’s ESC slogan: United By Music! [red heart emoji] I can only hope for some kind of change in the future. \End descriptions]

I know I talk a lot about nonbinary lesbians, butches with funky genders, lesbians who use pronouns aside from she/her but

I wanna take a second to appreciate the lesbians — especially black and butch lesbians — who consider themselves to be women. The lesbians who were denied womanhood, but carved out a place in womanhood for themselves. The lesbians who wear their she/her pronoun pins as a badge of pride. The ones who see their womanhood as a source of strength. You are incredible and I am so proud of you.

Psa partly because of this very nice tag, and partly because I had a “radical” “feminist” reblog this: this post includes butch lesbians, transfem lesbians, and transfem butch lesbians

[ID: Video of a large pile of children clothing of different types, including socks, shirts, dresses, and pants. There is a sign with the tumblr logo attached to the wall with the hashtag #helpgazachildren underneath the logo.

There are also four stationary images at the bottom of the post. The first one is of a large group of children from within Gaza wearing different colored clothing and outfits. Many of them are smiling at the camera, holding a thumbs up. The second photo is of the same group but in a slightly different pose.

The third photo focuses on a part of the group of children, some holding thumbs up. The fourth photo focuses on four children, some of them holding thumbs up as well.]

This stomach pain is really eating me up. I hope the colonoscopy will shed light on things but the prep is making me shaky and weak (add it to the list of things making me sweat). I know there's the element of spirit where my sense of self is growing. When I think of my old names I feel the pain there. I'm healing thru it. It hurts. I know the stress from caring for mom makes it worse. I know the fear of thinly veiled threats. There's so much I need to do. I have plans. But most importantl, I need to lie down and try to rest so that the flare doesnt get worse.

I have $50 worth of bills each month. trying to secure meals (I have low mobility/energy when I have a flare so I need to order delivery), and I'm also trying to save for travel to a safer place $500

So far I've only raised $3 but it def helped.

If you have the spoons to boost it or the funds to support me with my basic needs and help me afford to live.

[Video description: TikTok by @ LudaWinTheSky that starts showing a person with a calf brace and a red cane sitting on a couch as their partner brings them a mug. Narration says, ‘And would you stay with them? What if they became disabled?’ The two kiss and then stand, dancing together in place. The voiceover continues, ‘They ask as if our lives are their worst case scenario. And in that moment by mind takes me to every single disabled person about to create a dating app profile, wondering if they should use the photos that show their condition.’ The couple hugs, and then the other person lifts the speaker up and sways in place.

Voiceover continues, ‘I think about those first conversations or first dates, wondering when the right time to divulge the fact you have a disability is, or when to explain what having that disability actually means from day to day.’ The person sets the speaker back on the ground, and text below them says, ‘So far...staying for 3 years…’ The footage cuts to two people, one in a manual wheelchair, dancing together, with text that says, ‘staying for 10 years…’

The voiceover continues, ‘It’s just a joke, they tell you, as they find comedy in their stereotypical impressions of disabled people, making hand gestures to imitate their clearly very lacking perception of disability looks like.’ The footage cuts to a person in a powerchair kissing another person sitting on their lap. Text says, ‘staying for 15 months…’ The narration continues, ‘And now I remember that all too familiar joke.’ The footage shows two people cuddling together with text that says, ‘staying for 2.5 years…’

The voiceover continues, ‘You know, the one about dating and parking spaces.’ The footage shows someone in a manual chair smiling at the camera while being pushed by their partner. Text says, ‘staying for 5 years…’ This cuts to footage of a couple smiling at the camera at night, with text that says, ‘staying for 10 years...’

The narration continues, ‘One told all too often, so much so that I don’t even need to repeat it.’ The footage shows two people playing with a baby elephant, with text that says, ‘staying for 1 year…’ The narration continues, ‘But comedy should never be punching down.’ The footage shows a couple dancing, one in a wheelchair, while wearing ear protection. The person standing twirls their partner and their chair around and then kisses their partner. Text sasy, ‘staying for 4 years…’ The footage cuts to a couple standing on a rainy balcony in front of tall trees with text that says, ‘staying 5.5 years…’

The narration continues, ‘And as a disabled woman, it is all too real to feel as if you are at the bottom of a pile that you had no part in creating.’ The footage cuts to a couple lounging in an outdoor chair with text that says, ‘staying for 4 years…’ The next clip shows a couple in a dance studio kissing with text that says, ‘staying for 9 years…’ followed by POV footage of someone’s partner helping to adjust their leg at a pool, with text that says, ‘staying for 4 years...’ The narration continues, ‘And when fact dictates that disabled woman are six times more likely to be left during illness than men.’ The footage cuts to a person in a wedding dress reaching over to kiss a person in a tuxedo sitting in a powerchair, with text that says, ‘staying for 5 years…’

The narration continues, ‘Or when considering the vast statistics of disabled people facing abuse in relationships, I struggle to see the funny side.’ The footage cuts to two people walking outside while smiling at the camera, with text that says, ‘staing 1.5 years…’ This is followed by footage of a different couple sticking their tongues out playfully at the camera, with text that says, ‘staying 4 years…’ The next clip shows a person sitting on a pile of pillows and being helped by their partner to stand up, with text that says, ‘staying 3.5 years.’

The narration continues, ‘When I heard a conversation this week between able-bodied men laughing as they discussed the real lives of those of us living with disabilities, as though we are not real people, I’m sad to say that even despite all the work I’ve put in to dealing with interalised ableism, and even though I’ve been in a secure relationship for three years, I found myself turning to my partner and double-checking. You’re not embarrassed by my mobility aids are you?’ During this segment, the footage cuts to mirror footage of a person in a manual chair holding a large stuffed bear and a gift in their lap, smiling at the camera as their partner kisses the side of their head. Text says, ‘staying for a year…’ This is followed by POV footage of a person being tucked into bed by their partner, with text that says, ‘staying for a year…’ The next clip shows a small group dancing in a room with bright lights and fog, with text that says, ‘staying for 5 years…’ This is followed by a clip of a person in a manual chair with their partner at an outdoor event with long vertical string lights and text that says, ‘staying for over a year…’ The next clip shows people dancing in wedding attire at a church, with text that says, ‘staying for 2 years…’ After this is a clip of a couple smiling at the camera with text that says, ‘staying for 3.5 years…’

The narration continues, ‘My partner put my mind to rest instantly, and suddenly I realised. This conversation shouldn’t centre those with closed minds, those who lack compassion and empathy, those who fail to acknowledge that disabled people are the largest minority in the world, one that anybody could join at any given time.’ The footage in this sigment starts with a person filming their partner, who is sitting on a couch, over their shoulder, with text that says, ‘staying for 10 yaers…’ This is followed by dark footage in with only brightly lighted glowstick necklaces visible, with text that says, ‘staying for 6.5 years.’ The next clip shows a couple holding sparklers in their hands, with text that says, ‘staying for 3 years…’ This is followed by a clip of a couple walking out of a church in wedding clothes, with text that says, ‘staying for 17 years…’ The next clip shows a couple posing with colourful drinks, with text that says, ‘staying for 8 years.’ Next is footage of a couple on a snowy road smiling with an infant, with text that says, ‘staying for 9 years.’

The narration continues, ‘Instead, this should be a reminder to disabled people, a reminder that you are so valuable and so worthy of love. You are so worth staying for.’ The footage shows a person with a leg brace getting a foot massage from their partner on a sofa, with text that says, ‘staying for 8 months…’ The next clip shows people hiking, with text that says, ‘staying for 3 years…’ This is followed by footage of people in rain coats walking by a spray of water from a waterfall on a mountainside, with text that says, ‘staying for 5 years…’ Next is footage of a couple posing with their black cat, with text that says, ‘staying for 13 years…’ The next clip shows a person smiling as their wheelchair is pushed by their partner in a car park, with text that says, ‘staying for 2 years…’ This is followed by footage of a person proposing to their partner, who has a cane, in the middle of a large stone building, with text that says, ‘staying for 2 years...’

The narration concludes, ‘And when people show themselves to be incapable of being with someone as resilient and wonderful as you are, thank goodness that they made your path to finding the right person so much clearer.’ \End description]

firefox just started doing this too so remember kids if you want to stream things like netflix or hulu over discord without the video being blacked out you just have to disable hardware acceleration in your browser settings!

for the people saying this might be too difficult: idk about chrome but in firefox it just goes

> open settings

> search “hardware acceleration” and there should only be one result

> uncheck use recommended performance settings

> uncheck use hardware acceleration

done!

Since I’m looking at the comments and seeing a lot of people asking what hardware acceleration is and getting wildly incorrect answers, here you go. This is what hardware acceleration is. It’s not DRM, and it’s not placing a limit on memory usage (unless you have weird definitions for both “memory” and “placing a limit”).

This is what hardware acceleration is:

“Do you just have a graphic for this on hand at all times?”

Yes. For this precise reason.

hey just to let anyone using firefox know! searching “hardware acceleration” in firefox settings doesnt do anything! you wont get anything whatsoever! you have to scroll down on the main general settings page to “Performance” and uncheck “Use recommended performance settings” to be able to uncheck “Use hardware acceleration when available”! signed someone who was extremely confused when trying to follow OP’s instructions only for there to be no results

[Image description: Two charts comparing what happens when hardware acceleration is on versus off.

When on: Netflix: I have this cool thing that can be on your screen CPU: Okay cool lemme get that sorted out and then I’ll tell GPU to display it GPU: That’s a neat thing! It’s on the monitor now. Discord: I see you would like to share your screen with your friends. Allow me to take a look at your CPU’s video buffer so that I can do that! I see a Netflix video, so now they do too [smiley emoticon]

When off: Netflix: I have this cool thing that can be on your screen GPU: I am capable of both interpreting what you’re tring to send me [caps] and [end caps] displaying it. No need to get the CPU involved, it has better things to do, your thing is on the monitor now. [separately] CPU: GPU told me it has this one so I’m just gonna spend that energy on making sure your Minecraft safe with 500 mods doesn’t run at 2 FPS. Discord: I see you would like to share your screen with your friends. Allow me to take a look at your CPU’s video buffer so that I can do that! I see you have Netflix open, but there’s just a black box where the video would be, but I’m too dumb to understand that data is being handled by the GPU and also I don’t know how to access the GPU anyway so I’m just gonna broadcast the black box. I hope that’s what you wanted! [separately from both the above] Netflix: I’m actually not involved in this process at all, everything is being handled by the browser. I’m literally just showing you videos, like I get up to shady shit sometimes but this is not one of those times. \End description]

Everything is like “QUEER history” and “List of QUEER young adult books” or “Top 10 QUEER movies” and queer this and queer that and for the love of god please just say LGBT.

But queer is more inclusive

And faster to pronounce if you are talking instead of writing.

It’s not more inclusive, and if your excuse of using a slur as a blanket term is “it’s faster to say”, GENUINELY what is wrong with you

It’s called economía del lenguaje.

It’s also the respected academic term?? The acronym isn’t static and it’s usage is varied by things like generational difference, location, and knowledge of the community. Even just in the U.S. in the last few decades the common usage gone from GLBT to LGBT to LGBTQ, to LGBTQA/LGBTQIA/LGBTQIAP/etc (Which, let me tell you as someone who has given presentations in the past using these updated acronyms, are all real mouthfulls), to LGBT+.

Also yes, queer is more inclusive! Especially coming at it from an academic standpoint, people didn’t always use or identify with the terms we use now and you can’t always try to cram them into our modern perceptions of sexuality. We can argue for years about whether a famous historical figure was gay or bisexual or straight and trans or whatever, but if we can all agree that they were somehow queer then using that term allows us to move past the debate and into productive discussion. And not everybody everywhere shares the same terms for sexual and gender identity, or even the same concepts of those things, so queer really is a more inclusive term in a lot of cases.

Like yeah if you’re talking specifically about gay or trans people you can just say gay or transgender, but if you’re talking about more than one identity or someone who doesn’t conform to our perceptions of ‘LGBT,’ or a person or people whose identity you don’t know, queer is just the better word.

“That’s SO gay”, “Oh my god, you’re not a LESBIAN, are you?”

Your words are slurs, too. Why do you get your words, but I don’t get mine? What makes you so special?

I’m here, I’m queer, go fuck yourself.

baby gays,,,, i beg of you to learn your queer history and stop listening to terf bullshit

every single one of our labels has been used as a slur against us.

terfs and -phobes are always going to try and hurt us with what we identify as. but the fact remains these are OUR labels and always have been.

we’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.

I don’t know if this is just because I’m not American but I’ve never heard queer used as a slur. Ever. Meanwhile gay was the insult in the 2000s here. Everything you didn’t like was ‘soo gay’. Queer wasn’t even a word most of us knew back then.

It just baffled me that people would think an identifier is automatically a slur just because someone uses it to mock someone. If we did that gay would be a slur. Stupid would be a slur. Autistic would be a slur.

The reason people are upset about the word queer is that it’s a unifying term. You can say you’re queer and all people will know is that you’re part of the community. But you can’t say you’re LGBT, you have to say you’re gay or trans or ace. They don’t want you to be ambiguously queer. They want you to say which kind of queer you are so they can decide whether you’re undesirable.

yeah in the 90s and early 2000s kids would call each other “gay” as an insult. But no one ties themselves in knots over whether “gay” is a slur. So yeah, please ffs learn your history.

gaysemiotics

Remember that NO minority is monolith, and no one individual has the exclusive right to speak for an entire group as to what is an what is not acceptable. For me, queer is a commonly used term in the arts and film world, and is an all-encompassing term for many types of genres and themes in art. We’re here, we’re queer - stop drinking the TERF kool-aid.
