From the bounce of British Bhangra to the thump of Welsh HipHop, the fire of South American rhythms to the warmth of bigband jazz, we’ll be using the whole spectrum to paint the bigger picture.

CARDIFF - SATURDAY 9TH DECEMBER --------------------------- Gwdihw is known as the place to go for both alternative live acts and alternative DJs and it’s that forward thinking that drives the Cosmogramma team’s ethos.

Bristol’s genre bending, minimalist, electronic, improvising tour de force Hippo are headlining this weekend with live support from Sous Les Paves.

I’ll be on the decks as a guest DJ and there will also be music from the Cosmogramma DJs as well. Whole night of space funk, future beats and all things out of this world!

Peel Schooling Us On Gangsta Rap ----------------- Some astute observation from Mr. John Peel in his autobiography Margrave of the Marshes.

The quote reads:

“Throughout the seventies, the band Slade had enjoyed a considerable run of success with a string of records, including ‘Mama Weer All Crazee Now’, ‘Cum On Feel The Noize’ and the wonderful ‘Bangin’ Man’, the misspelling of whose titles predated the gangsta rap enthusiasm for phonetic spelling by close to three decades.”

On point.

1467% PROFIT! (Not that I’m selling it!) --------------------------------------------- While up in North Wales for DJ gigs last month I found a bit of time between two dates to hit up Mudshark Records in Bangor to see if they had anything I was after.

Some interesting pieces in there that I asked them to play for me but nothing really took my fancy until I found this hiding in the 7″ box for just £2. I didn’t need to hear it, I knew what it was already and I knew that regardless of its condition that I was going to come out on top given that it was so cheap!

Prince’s track ‘Sexy Dancer’ along with ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’ and ‘Just As Long As We’re Together’ are very sought-after singles from the elusive artist’s eponymous debut. The singles (particularly the 12″s) go for proper money and are out of my price range and seeing as I’ve never even seen the LP or Sexy Dancer in person I was more than happy to grab this 7″.

Like the other choice cuts from that first album, Sexy Dancer is a groove that just doesn’t stop and keeps on giving. Appropriately repetitive, great uptempo dancefloor tune with solid timing, one hell of a hook and some trademark cheeky punctuating stabs throughout.

The monthly slot at this bar is completely open for me to experiment and bring some really exciting sounds and attempt to find a glue to pull them together.

Finally happy to own a proper record box in preparation for my 5 gigs this month.

I figured having bookings coming in and spending countless hours every morning emailing venues, promoters and trying to practice in between makes it more than ok to splash out the amazingly cheap sum of £35 on this great box by Gorilla!

It’s currently housing the set I’m recording as a guest mix for Cardiff’s Kelly’s Records....

UK Gig-goers!

Anybody out there often go to hip-hop nights/DJ nights or anything along those lines? Seriously just need suggestions of what venues put on decent nights around Wales/England/Scotland and would appreciate any leads!
