    Chapter 7 (5.6k words)

You wake up from the sound of something buzzing and from the pounding in your head. The pain is punishing, the type that makes you wonder why you had decided to drink that much the night before. You still feel a bit fazed and a part of you wonders whether you were still feeling the alcohol.

It takes you a moment to realise where you were, memories from the night come in glimpses and there’s a weird feeling that washes over you at the image of you and Carlos in the hallway. You try your best to shake that memory off but every time you shut your eyes for too long you’re reminded of Carlos’ body almost pressed against yours. “Shit,” You murmur to yourself when you realise your phone was the one ringing.

You pick it up without thinking, pressing the phone against your ear and letting out a tired breath. “Hello?” You ask rubbing your eyes as you try your best to wake yourself up.

“Are you okay? Why did you call six times?” Bastien’s voice wakes you up, getting you to sit up on the bed to collect yourself. You faintly remember calling Bastien and him not picking up, but you’re not sure why you called him in the first place.

“I got back to the hotel from partying and wanted to talk to you.” You explain, already kicking yourself in your head for doing so.

“Oh? You went out?” Bastien asks and you rub your head a bit in hopes of getting the pain to leave and to clear your head too.

“Mhm, with a few of the drivers and a few of their friends. It was really fun.” You say before letting out a soft breath. “I just wanted to talk to you once I got back to the hotel. Where were you?” You asked, your eyes dart to the couch at the sound of Carlos shifting. You hear him let out a soft groan and you cover your mic just a bit.

“I was asleep.” Bastien says although there is something in the way he says it that makes you bite the inside of your cheek. “Thought you were heading off to bed so I went to sleep early, sorry babe.”

“Ah, okay.” You say softly and you’re wondering whether to tell Bastien or not that you had slept over in Carlos’ room, not knowing how your boyfriend was going to take the news. Before you have the chance to mention it though, Bastien is already speaking up.

“Can I call you back later tonight?” He asks and you’re frowning a bit, having hoped to have talked to him a bit longer. He had been quite busy that week which meant you both had not managed to catch up a lot.

“Yeah, of course.” You say though? “What do you have to do?” This time you notice Carlos is sitting up on the couch and the moment he turns to you you’re pressing your finger to your lips to gesture to him to be quiet. Carlos looks completely out of it, hair sticking in different directions, and he barely opens his eyes as he waddles to the bed, soon laying down next to you with his face in the pillow. You can’t help but smile, instinctively reaching your hand out to fix his messy hair. Carlos tenses up the first second he feels your touch but relaxes after a bit, turning his head a bit to watch you on the phone.

“Just meeting friends. I’ll talk to you later babe. Sorry, I just wanted to check in to make sure you were okay.” Bastien explains shortly and you’re distracted with the way Carlos looks at you, not even snapping into the conversation until Bastien speaks up again.

“I love you,” He says and you’re pulling your hand away, setting it down on your lap before telling Bastien that you love him too before hanging up and letting out a deep breath.

A part of you wondered whether he was upset with you for going to the party but you figured that you would find out later.

“Morning,” You tell Carlos, setting your phone down on the side table before looking over at him again.

“Thanks for letting me sleep on the bed and for taking the couch.” You murmur and Carlos is turning over to lay on his back, rubbing his eyes

You can’t help but run your eyes over his chest, only thinking of how fit he had gotten over the years. Sure you knew how much formula one drivers had to work out, but you were still quite surprised.

It feels extremely nostalgic to see Carlos like this, shirtless, sleepy, and laying next to you on the bed. Your mind wanders a bit and you need to stop your train of thoughts, looking away. You look down at yourself instead, looking over Carlos’ shirt that you’re wearing. You ball up the bottom of the shirt to pull it a bit to properly read the lettering on it.

“Really?” You chuckle when you realise you’re wearing one of Carlos’ old football jerseys from when he used to regularly play in highschool.

Carlos shrugs with a smile. “It’s the only one I could find.” He chuckles, although there’s a slight glint in his eyes . His eyes scan over you before he’s running his hands through his hair. “Was that Bastien?” He asks and you give him a nod back, leaning back on the headboard.

“Mhm, just wanted to check on me. I think I called him last night. I don’t remember.” You chuckle sheepishly. There’s space between you both but you can somehow feel the heat radiating off of Carlos and you’re fighting the urge to nuzzle into him.

“How long did we sleep for?” Carlos asks, holding his head. “I don’t know if I’m still drunk or hungover.” He says and you let out a breathy laugh.

“I was thinking the same.” You say before checking the time. “It’s eight still, we probably slept for three or four hours?” You murmur, this time shifting to properly lay down on your back as well.

You don’t know why but your heart is beating fast and you’re suddenly hyper aware with both how far and how close you were from Carlos. It doesn’t help when he shifts on his side to face you, laying his head on his hand.

There’s something in his mind and you can tell he’s debating whether to tell you or not but you’re not sure if you want to hear it.

“How was it with the girl? Julia?” You ask remembering Max’s friend’s name. Carlos gives you a shrug.

“It was fun, she was really nice.” He says and you let out a small huff.

“She was really pretty, I don’t know why you didn’t go back with her.” You don’t know why you’re bringing it up, but deep down you do. It’s horrible but a part of you didn’t like seeing them dancing together.

“You needed me.” Carlos says and he moves close to brush some hair off your face. Your breath hitches a bit and it’s such a small touch but it somehow feels too intimate. “I’d drop anything for you, you know that.” He murmurs and you let out a soft laugh, shaking your head. You feel bad for brushing it off but you don’t want his words to get into your head.

“I mean it.” Carlos murmurs though and you hold back a sigh, rubbing your eyes instead as an excuse to not really say anything back.

None of you need to acknowledge it but you both know it’s there. The way Carlos is looking at you and the way you’re looking at him, it’s clear that you both want something. It’s only after a bit of silence that you realize how close you both had gotten and a part of you wonders how close you both could get. Would any of you stop it?

“It’s kinda chilly, hm?” Carlos murmurs almost reading your mind. It’s a weak attempt but it’s an attempt nonetheless because as soon as you nod he’s moving closer and you’re suddenly so close that you can almost feel his skin on yours.

You thought it was impossible but you’re sure your heart is beating even harder now and you wonder whether Carlos can hear it. His hand drops a bit down to your (technically his,) shirt and he fiddles with the hem for a bit.

“Drunk me might have picked that shirt on purpose.” He confesses and his hand is so close to your skin that you move your leg a bit on instinct.

“I thought so.” You murmur quietly, eyes watching his hand.

Carlos is focused on his hand too, humming softly. This is wrong. You think but a selfish part of you doesn’t care.

“You look good in my shirt.” He says, pausing a bit to see whether it was too direct. You don’t say anything though and soon he’s tracing his fingers over your thigh.

“Carlos,” you murmur and the small circles he’s tracing in your skin makes you dizzy, leaving small goosebumps all over your skin.

“Yeah?” Carlos says and he stops for a second, waiting for you to say something but you shake your head and mumble out a ‘nevermind’.

You’re not thinking and you know it because you’re turning a bit towards him and that’s enough for Carlos to hold your waist, soon pulling you so you’re on top of him.

He shifts a bit so he’s sat up against the headboard and you’re on his lap. Your hands instinctively rest on his chest and you can feel your face burning.

You both have so little on and your hand is gently brushing his bare chest. You can feel how fast his heart is beating and you’re a bit relieved that it isn’t just you.

“What are we doing?” You ask softly after a bit but Carlos is running his hands over your thighs.

“I don’t know what we are doing.” He says and you take a deep breath, wanting to look away but Carlos is cupping your cheek to get him to look at you.

“Carlos,” You murmur but he’s soon lowering his hand down to your neck, soon pulling you a bit closer as he leans forward.

You wonder what would have happened if the doorbell hadn’t rang.

You both jump away when you hear it and you’re quick to scramble off of Carlos and on your feet. The ringing is persistent too, and soon you’re hearing Rupert calling for Carlos and of course Carlos had training the day after a party

“Fuck,” he murmurs, soon getting up and he’s shifting his boxers a bit before he’s going to the door to open it.

“Hey Rupert, I thought I texted you that I wouldn’t be able to train today.” He says and he’s barely opening the door, simply sticking his head out.

You hear Rupert say something back and Carlos is apologizing, explaining that he must have forgotten to press send. They talk for a while and watching Carlos talk clears your mind a bit. What the hell are you doing? You think to yourself and for the first time since you hung up you properly think of Bastien. The guilt washes over you like a wave.

Once Rupert is gone he shuts the door and turns to you. You don’t need to say anything because your face is enough for Carlos to know.

“Y/n,” he says and it’s clear that he wants you to not think about it but you’re shaking your head, letting out a forced laugh.

“You know what? I’m still quite tired. I should go and ask for my key so I can get some more sleep.” You murmur quietly as you step away.

“I,” Carlos starts, and you’re shaking your head, not even looking at him.

“I can take you downstairs.” He says instead and you give him a small nod, thanking him softly before you grab your dress.

    ________________

The guilt didn’t go away for the next few day. The feeling of his fingers are still shadowing your skin, and seeping into every single thought you had. Because of this you mainly spent your time in your room, sure you did go out for a bit, but you mainly spent your time catching up with Bastien and being glued to your phone. You were hoping that talking more to Bastien would help you feel less guilty but you soon learned it made you feel worse.

You did manage to get yourself to go out, especially when you were invited to go to things with the team, and even with Lando and Max. Did you check that Carlos wasn’t coming? Maybe. But you couldn’t bring yourself to face him just yet without feeling extremely guilty.

Technically you weren’t actively avoiding Carlos, he hadn’t specifically reached out to you either. So what if you went a bit around him?

It’s the last morning before the second round of testing when you finally talk to Carlos. It comes out of nowhere and you don’t really expect it since it is seven in the morning. You’re usually asleep at this time but you had agreed to call Bastien since he had to take an early flight for a business trip.

You open the door when you hear the knock, not really sure as to who would be needing you this early in the day but you find Carlos standing there wearing gym attire, a jacket, and a bottle of water in his hand.

“Oh,” He says, looking at you, you’re confused as to why he looks surprised to see you. He was knocking on your door after all. “I didn’t think you’d be up.” He says a bit nervously now and you shift a bit on your feet.

“What are you doing up?” You ask, were you both just going to ignore what happened?

Carlos hesitates for a moment and you wonder if he had been avoiding you too the past two days.

“I was gonna go on a hike on a trail nearby. I know it’s kinda cold but I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?” Carlos offers, quite normally in fact, and you’re not sure if you’re happy or upset that he’s choosing to ignore the tension too.

“Hmm,” You murmur, taking your moment to look at both the time and the chat you had open with Bastien. He was late for the call, and you send him a question mark to check whether he was going to show up or not. “Who else is going?” You ask, not entirely sure of your answer.

“Just me actually,” Carlos says and this time he’s scratching the back of his neck awkwardly and you suddenly feel a bit nervous yourself.

“Give me a sec,” You say, calling Bastien really quick. You hear the line ring and your mind is hoping that Bastien picks up the call but a feeling in your chest is hoping that he doesn’t.

The line dies out after a few rings and you look down at your phone before looking at Carlos. “Okay, sure. I’ll change.” You say, locking your phone. “Just give me five.” You’re shutting the door behind you and going to your luggage, knowing you had shoved your workout clothes somewhere.

You come out almost ten minutes later in your leggings, hoodie, and a jacket. It was quite cold still outside but you hoped it would be enough to keep you warm. “Ready,” You say, surprised to find Carlos sitting on the floor beside your door with his arms resting on his knees. You stand in front of him this time, extending your hand out before you’re pulling him up.

“Thanks,” Carlos says and you give him a small nod before you’re shoving your hands in your pockets.

Apparently the hike was a bit of a drive away but it’s a nice drive. The sun was already out and shining in through the car’s windows and that’s one of the things you loved most about Spain. No matter the season the sun was most of the time up to greet you.

“Haven’t seen you since we got you your key.” Carlos says after driving for quite a bit. You look away from the window and look over at him, giving him a small shrug.

“I was really tired if I’m being honest.” You say, resting your head on the window. You weren’t lying, all the work from the pre-testing days had caught up to you and you had spent most of your time in bed to get enough rest to have energy for the upcoming week.

“Yeah, the party didn’t really help with getting enough rest.” Carlos says, letting out a soft chuckle.

You’re soon arriving at your destination because Carlos is parking the car and pointing at the trail you guys are meant to follow. “We’ll get up there.” he says pointing at the top and you give him a nod as you take off your seatbelt.

It’s a bit colder than you expect but you figure that you’re gonna warm up once you guys start walking and Carlos lets you go first. “What have you been up to the past two days?” You ask Carlos as you both start up the trail.

“I’ve just been sleeping really, hung out with Lando a bit and also with Nico, but I also met with a friend or two.” Carlos says and you nod along to his words.

The small talk continues, and the conversation isn’t bad, but it’s different than it usually is. As you both talk a part of you wonders whether you and Carlos were just going to act like nothing had happened. You wonder whether to bring it up or not but you can’t find the right moment to say it either.

“Why were you up so early?” Carlos asks. You’re almost to the top, having walked and chatted for almost an hour and having warmed up a bit as well.

“Um- I was waiting for Bastien actually. We agreed to call.” You say, following the trail carefully as you consciously make sure to step on certain spots in the trail.

“Ah, alright.” Carlos says, and you’re soon reaching the end of the trail, getting to the top of the hill. “I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.” He says, letting out a breath once you both stopped.

“No, no.” You say, giving him a reassuring smile. “He didn’t actually make it, don’t know, maybe he forgot.” You say, not thinking much of it. The view is amazing and you’re looking around, seeing parts of Barcelona. You’re about to compliment the view when Carlos speaks up.

“He’s an asshole, you know that, no?” Carlos says and you’re surprised at his words, looking over at him.

“Excuse me?” You ask, not entirely sure if you had heard him correctly.

Carlos laughs a bit, fixing the beanie on his head. “He’s a bit of an asshole.” He says again and you’re watching him still. “I don’t get why you’re with him.”

“Did you take me all the way here to tell me that?” You ask, and that’s when Carlos realises you’r annoyed.

“Of course not.” Carlos says, looking at you. “I just think he could treat you better.” He says, and you’re not sure what comes over you but you’re feeling very upset with his comment.

“I didn’t ask about what you think Carlos.” You say, clenching your jaw a bit as you look away. “You don’t know anything about our relationship.” You defend.

“I’ve seen you cry over him y/n.” He says and the tone in his voice has your skin crawling.

“That was once Carlos.” You’re shaking your head, trying to shake off the feeling in your chest.

You had been feeling guilty the past few days, and Carlos piling this all up was not helping. Sure Bastien had made some questionable choices in the past, but what the hell were you doing?

“And he didn’t tell you today that he wasn’t going to call you anymore?” Carlos says, clearly not reading how much the conversation was starting to frustrate you. He’s starting to mention another few things he’s noticed and you’re starting to zone him out, feeling a knot forming in your stomach and a sense of anxiety beginning to consume you.

“Carlos, can you stop?” You say now, your voice is a bit sharp but Carlos doesn’t. Instead he continues.

“No but y/n, I’m just saying,” He says and you’re soon running out of patience, turning to him properly.

“I fucking said stop Carlos. Shut up.” You snap and your voice is sharp this time. Carlos grows quiet and you’re both staring at each other. It takes you a second to recollect yourself before you’re speaking up again.

“I don’t know what you think about Bastien and I but it’s literally none of your business.” You say, not looking away from him. You know it’s a lie, of course it was Carlos’ business. “Like seriously, back off.”

Carlos is quiet after this, shifting on his feet a bit. He looks over the view this time, turning a bit. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep.” He says after a bit and you shake your head.

“It’s fine. I just don’t want to talk about it.” You murmur, letting out a deep breath before you’re tightening your jacket around yourself. If you were being honest, you knew Carlos was right, but you didn’t feel like you were much better. Sure, you had managed to avoid Carlos the past few days, but your mind hadn’t cleared up a single bit.

“I’m sorry.” You say after a bit, realising that you were probably taking your anger out on Carlos when it was frankly not his fault. You were the one in the relationship.

“Hey,” Carlos murmurs and this time he’s giving your arm a gentle nudge.

“Hm?” You look over at him, and he actually looks really guilty and you feel slightly bad for losing your temper the way you did.

“We’re good, yeah?” Carlos says and you chew the inside of your cheek.

“Yeah.” You say giving him a small nod.

After your little hike and outburst you did actually feel a bit better. Somehow the dynamics with Carlos were a bit more normal. Apparently ignoring what had happened did help a bit (especially when Carlos had done the same thing).

The second round of pre-season testing was easier to say the least. You already knew what to expect, mentally ready for all the work that was going to be done.

Overall, although the car was not crazy competitive, you were quite proud to see Carlos and Lando end with decent lap times. To nobody’s surprise Mercedes topped the sheets, but with a driver like Lewis it was also hard to believe otherwise.

“Good job Carlos,” Tom says when you’re all packing things up. He’s looking over the time sheets and you look over at Carlos who is grinning from ear to ear.

“Most laps during pre-season testing, impressive,” You tease him and Carlos rolls his eyes before he’s coming to you. You’re sitting and his hands land on your shoulders, surprising you a bit. He shakes you back and forth, making you groan.

“We’re done with testing!” He cheers, grinning at you. “You know what this means,” he says and you’re looking up at him with furrowed brows. “Your first season in an F1 team is starting!” He sounds so happy and the way he’s smiling at you has you going a bit red.

“It really is,” You laugh, relaxing.

“We should celebrate.” Carlos says and he looks over his watch to check the time. He looks around the garage before he’s looking at you again. “I’m taking you and Lando to dinner. It’s gonna be his first proper season too.” He grins before he’s pulling away, rambling about going to find Lando to make sure he didn’t have any other plans.

“Are you excited?” Tom asks and you give him a look of disbelief.

“Of course I am,” You say, not believing that he had asked you that and Tom can’t help but laugh. “By the way, I was meaning to ask, are you sure it’s okay if I take some time off?” You ask again. You both had been talking during the final days on the possibility to go back home for a bit before the season. It was public knowledge how tiring the traveling usually was and how little you got to see either friends or family and if you were being honest, you wanted to see Bastien before all the travelling would start. You were also hoping it would help wash the guilt away.

“Y/n, I told you this already, of course you can take some time off.” Tom says, shaking his head. “You’re good. Go enjoy time with your family, your boyfriend.”

“You’re the best Tom, seriously.” You grin as Carlos is coming back, this time with Lando trailing behind him.

“We’re going. Is that okay?” He asks Tom with a smile and of course Tom waves you off to leave.

“Oh wow, we actually got a table this time.” You tease both drivers once you’re seated at the table. It’s a nice Spanish restaurant and Carlos was convinced that he would make Lando try paella. You’re a bit sceptical as you read the menu, knowing most paellas in Barcelona had seafood in it, but Carlos is kind enough to settle with one that doesn’t so Lando doesn’t have any choice but to try the food.

You’re all digging in, talking about how the pre-testing was and Carlos and you are mainly asking Lando, since you weren’t fully up to date with how it was going for him. It’s endearing how excited Lando sounds and he asks questions to Carlos about how the car was treating him. Of course Carlos is more than happy to ramble on about different tips and tricks that he learned throughout the years and you can’t help but to listen closely too.

By the time you reach dessert the topic of driving is already all worn out, and that’s when Lando decides to butt in.

“So, what did you guys do after the party last week?” Lando asks as he’s taking a spoonful of his flan. Carlos looks at you before he’s looking at Lando and there’s a silence because you’re not answering the question either.

“Oh- I was just really drunk and lost my key.” You say once you realise Carlos wasn’t going to answer first.

Lando snorts, giving you a look. “How did you lose your key?” he asks in amusement and you stick your tongue at him.

“Anyways, I was drunk, like really drunk and I hoped Carlos would show up and help but he was just as useless.” You say, looking over at Carlos with a smirk.

“Hey- I let you sleep in my room.” Carlos says and Lando is suddenly invested in the conversation, setting his spoon down to look over the both of you. Your entire demeanor changes and you straighten your back up a bit.

“Mhm, and I said thank you.” You say, looking down at your own dessert and tapping your spoon on the plate gently.

“And Bastien was cool about that?” Lando asks, and you’re a surprised by his bluntness. Carlos’ slight smile falls and he suddenly looks uncomfortable, shifting a bit in his seat.

“I- well- Carlos took the couch and I took the bed,” You say, feeling the need to let Lando know. “But, no, he doesn’t know.” You say with a shrug. ‘Didn’t feel like it was important to bring up.” You say and Lando gives you a nod. “But I’m gonna see him in a few days. So maybe I’ll tell him then.” Carlos is looking at you now, a bit surprised.

“Ah cool,” Lando says, picking up his spoon again. Carlos on the other hand is quiet, just listening to you both converse. “Is he coming to the UK again?” he asks and you shake your head.

“Gonna go to him, Tom said I could take some time off before the season.” You say with a smile.

Lando nods along, soon asking how long you were going to be gone for and you can’t help but tease him. “I’ll be gone for two week and I’ll be back three days before the season starts. Why? Are you going to miss me?”

Lando laughs and rolls his eyes. “Trust me, I’m not the one you should be worried about.” He says and you roll your eyes, glancing over at Carlos and giving him a small smile.

“I’ll miss you both but I’ll be back before you know it.” You say.

    _________

You took the first flight back to the UK before taking the next flight to France where Bastien was staying. It’s a surprise and you’re thankful that his mother was more than happy to help arrange the whole thing. The moment you see Bastien you’re leaping into his arms, letting out a deep breath, and seeing him as excited as you definitely made the back to back flights worth it.

You’re exhausted though, and by the time you both get to bed your body feels like jelly as you curl up under the sheets. Bastien’s walking around the room, tidying some stuff since he hadn’t expected you to show up. He’s saying something about your things and you ask him for your charger, telling him your spare was somewhere under all the clothes. You hadn’t bothered unpacking from Barcelona, simply shoving other things in to take with you.

Bastien is shuffling with your things and you hear him pause, you assume he’s found your charger but he doesn’t get up from where he was crouched by your luggage,

“Can you find it? Do you need help?” You ask, sitting up and letting out a yawn. You’re rubbing your eyes as he turns and you see he’s holding something but you need to blink a few times before you realise that it isn’t a charger.

    He’s holding a shirt.

“What’s this?” He asks, soon holding up the shirt to let you properly see it and your stomach falls at the sight of it.

“Bastien,” There’s a lump in your throat as you look over Carlos’ jersey, ‘Sainz’ splattered on the shirt along with the number 55. “It’s not- wait. I can explain.” You say already feeling lightheaded.

“What is it then hm? Why do you have this?” He asks and his voice is short and cold.

“Listen, I borrowed his shirt because I locked myself out of my room when we went to party and we were too drunk to go to reception. I was supposed to return it but I completely forgot.” You say quickly, already getting up to walk to him. Bastien rolls his eyes though, taking a step back.

“Where did you sleep?” He asks and you’re feeling sick.

“In his room- but he took the couch and I took the bed.” You say quickly and for a split second you wonder whether to tell him about the morning after but you don’t have enough time to even mention it.

“You slept in his room? Drunk?” He asks and you can tell he’s furious, balling up Carlos’ shirt. “Why the fuck didn’t you tell me y/n? Hm?” You’re tearing up, feeling absolutely awful.

“I’m sorry, I just didn’t think it was important. Nothing happened.” You say, watching him throw the shirt to the ground. You don’t know if you’re even lying. Nothing had happened but you knew what little that did happen was bad. You feel even worse and a part of you wonders whether Bastien knew you were lying.

“Please believe me.” You’re crying now, tears streaming down your cheeks.

“Why should I believe you when you’re not telling me the truth hm?” He asks and you’re shaking your head, coming close to take his hands on yours.

“We didn’t- we didn’t do anything. Nothing happened.” You say, looking at him and searching for his eyes but he refuses to look at you properly. “Bastien, please. I love you.” You say but he’s pulling away.

“I don’t want you near him y/n, I mean it. I don’t like it.” He says and you’re wiping your cheeks, sniffling.

“I work with him, Bastien.” You say and he finally looks you in the eyes. That’s enough for you to know that he knew something had happened. You couldn’t even argue, knowing that the guilt was written all over your face.

“Nothing outside of work y/n.” He says and you feel like your chest is being twisted.

“Bastien,” You try but he’s shaking his head.

“He’s your ex.” He says, giving you a look that lets you know he is not going to budge and you have to look away.
