Splinterlands Share Your Battle Weekly Challenge Costal Sentry Winning Over Higher Level Cards

New Soulbound Reward Cards Keep Changing the Game -

I really enjoyed getting new reward cards as the new cards and abilities continued to add wrinkles and new opportunities and strategies. These card provide that much needed change to the game as things can start to feel very predictable and automated when setting your lineups. It becomes much more interesting to see how you can create an advantage or a new approach that might counter the most popular traditional setups. This battle should showcase Coastal Sentry and see what we can do. I'm hoping to provide examples for those who are just starting the game or like me or kept financially and how much they can invest into a team to start with if pursuing ownership versus rentals.

Weekly Challenge -COASTAL SENTRY

Edition: REWARDS (SOULBOUND) Rarity: COMMON Element: WATER Attack: MELEE Abilities: DOUBLE STRIKE Health: 6 Speed: 3 Attack: 3 Armor: 1

Reasons Why I like it

Coastal Sentry is one of the new soul bound reward cards that I find very intriguing. Since water splinter is already moving towards a melee centric splinter, this will only add more firepower towards that. It's a well-rounded melee card with three melee damage three-speed one armor and six health. Considering the both speed and armor will get a boost if using Kelya, it can be a real danger in lineups. It does have a very high mana cost of 10 but considering that I'm playing mostly in silver and gold league that has less of an impact due to the higher manners of those leagues.

The Matchup

The Rule Sets

Watch the Match Here

MANA: 30

Ruleset: Melee Mayhem: Melee monsters can attack from any position.

Ruleset: Spreading Fury: All monsters gain the enraged ability which multiplies their speed and melee attack by 1.5x rounded up.

SPLINTERS: Water, Earth, Death, Dragon

Initial Rule Set and Mana Gameplay Thoughts

It's a really interesting rule set in one of my favorites to play. Combining melee mayhem with spreading theory which only goes to boost melee monsters by one and a half under speed and attack can create some really hard to hit heavy hitting monsters.

I think this will be a water heavy matchup and want to boost my speed, armor and melee as much as possible while showing out as much damage as I can. The 30 mana is going to limit the cards you can pick and I'll have to see what I can do to protect my monsters from being targeted to heavily. I don't think that magic plays well given the boost in attack from enraged and allowing all melee monsters to attack from any positions.

  • Summoner KELYA FRENDUL as I mentioned I wanted these boost to both the speed and armor this allows me to get out faster and when I get enraged it'll be another one and a half times on that. Anything you can do to increase the base before getting boosted is a must
  • First Position DIEMONSHARK Clearly very popular choice giving its speed armor and damage. Most likely first position card for water in most lineups let alone this one
  • Second Position DEMENTED SHARK Any chance I have to boost my melee by 1 or having to monitor that now can also attack with decent speed and attack damage is it no brainer
  • Third Position COASTAL SENTRY Really wanted to focus on Coastal Sentry here since you provides a double attack and will be boosted to formally and for speed. Double attack will be key at getting through armor and when it's enraged should be doing six damage with six speed making it very hard to hit even though it will have low health
  • Fourth Position FROST LION Pretty good two minute card, I picked it since it has an armor to start with and a two speed. It's not a powerhouse but if it's boosted by demon shark then it should be doing some damage and helping. It will also be the second card targeted by opportunity cards thus helping to keep my primary cards in the battle and healthy
  • Fifth Position TORRENT FIEND 0 minute cards are the best of course, and if it gets boosted by speed armor and melee attack it actually becomes a more useful weapon than you think while soaking up any of those opportunity and sneak attacks.

Opponent Lineup & Match Play

  • Summoner KELYA FRENDUL as I suspected water is going to be heavily played and it makes the most logical summoner to use. Really not happy to see that it's a level four max level for silver league. More than likely the rest of the team will be maxed out just a really as well.
  • DIEMONSHARK not exactly happy to see that it's a level four with stats greater than mine to start with before any abilities are applied but it is what it is
  • FLYING SQUID another nasty level 5 card with stats much higher than mine I think it's going to be very difficult to beat to sell the card with great abilities and power
  • DEEPLURKER high-powered opportunity card dealing significant damage before it's boosted
  • TORRENT FIEND fully expected a zero minor card to be in play here, would be a great card to add if I had an opportunity but since I don't it was mostly be useless other than providing a single melee attack
  • CRUEL SETHROPOD great rear tank and honestly underutilized by me giving its armor and attack. It is a great option to put in the rear guard to protect against any sneak attacks

Round 1

Clearly I'm well behind and card level and stats. Their team appears to be maxed out to silver league with the 5432 caps and they're going to be much harder to hit, and much harder hitting.

Has the round starts the factor cards are higher means that they're going to be attacking first most of the time. The biggest impact I think that was had was that Coastal century did a double attack on demon shark taking itself down. I also got very very lucky that my frost line then hit and took out it's very fast Diemonshark given the 50/50 nature of the attack.

Round 2

Front two starts off looking in my favor just because I was able to knock out their tank while mine is still has 100% of health. While my luck continues to hold with attacking monsters that have a 40% chance to miss, Coastal Sentry pulls off another double hit and knocks out flying squid making my team well ahead in a match. All the round ends with a couple of Misses on both sides overall round 2 was heavily in my favor

Round 3

Round three starts and things look very promising to me, I'm not sure there's any way to lose at this point given the luck already had with hitting very fast monsters. While I do lose my Diemonshark Coastal century continues to hammer monsters that are 40% chance to miss every single time and all that locks up in the victory.

Round 4

There is around 4:00 but let's be honest at this point is really just about taking out the last monster amazingly it takes all four attacks this round to actually get it done due to its high armor load but we get the job done.

Thoughts - and Chances to Win Again

I think that I picked a great lineup that benefited heavily from high speed and some really good rng. I think this is exactly the kind of lineup you have to set if you're going to try to beat significantly higher level cards like I faced. Level two summoners versus level four seminars leaves at a big disadvantage and you have to both get crafty and lucky to pull these victories off.

Taking a look at my chances to win a gun it shows that I actually am a 60% favorite to win the match which means that I have both a better lineup and strategy involved even though my cards are lower level but I clearly will lose a significant number of times if repeated. Well I enjoy having a 60% chance to win, I would like to boost in a little bit in the future and see what else I can do to increase my odds and it might mean leveling up cards

Overall I couldn't be happier with Coastal century performing flawlessly. A double strike card with four-speed and four melee is going to be very difficult to take out in some matches. It's low health means it could be targeted by magic, but when magic is not a threat it's going to be taking out a significant number of fosters by itself we're reducing their health to a level probably knocked out by the next attack.
