Members of a private WhatsApp group, including billionaires like the CEO of Dell and the former CEO of Starbucks, allegedly used the chat to discuss ways to pressure New York City Mayor Eric Adams to use police to crack down on Gaza solidarity protests at the city’s universities, according to The Washington Post. AJ+ has not seen the chat messages referenced in The Washington Post’s report directly. ⁣

NYPD officers raided encampments at schools like Columbia University and the City College of New York, arresting close to 200 protesters in just one day. The police raid at Columbia in late April was the first on-campus mass arrest in 50 years, with police using riot gear and military-grade weapons against mostly peaceful protesters. ⁣

While Gaza solidarity encampments have been frequently targeted with violence by police and pro-Israel agitators – and over 2,200 people have been arrested – a study found that out of over 550 Gaza protests at U.S. universities, 97% have been peaceful. ⁣

I’ve seen several media outlets trying to claim that the UN has ‘quietly’ halved the number of Palestinian women and children killed since October 7th. Some have gone so far as to allege that Hamas fabricated the original numbers to try and cover for the 1:1 ratio of insurgents to civilians killed.

They’ve chosen to ignore the fact that the UN published a completely separate report, comprised of individuals whose remains have been identified.

The UN has clarified that the total number of women and children killed in Gaza since October 7th remains unchanged.

The way that exclusionists treat ace and aro people often reminds me of how the average person would treat me when I started being open as non-binary. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand times, we are not enemies. Our experiences do not oppose each other, they are intertwined. If you’re ace, if you’re aromantic, if you’re any variation thereupon; your home is here. You belong here, too. You are beautiful, and powerful; and you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone. You are a valued part of this community.

I very nearly just started crying reading this.

[Artwork of a vague human figure. In the first image the figure frowns at their hand, which is marked with a smeared rainbow of color from a wound on their chest. Text reads: “I believe, I believe, I believe”.

In the second image, they look down at another figure sitting on the floor with arms around their knees, pulled against their chest, marked with green, grey, black, white, and purple. Text reads: “In your pain, In your pain, In your pain.”

In the third image, the original figure gently pulls the new one up by the elbows. Text reads: “You’re like me, You’re like me, You’re like me”.

In the fourth image, they hug, smiling, with rays of light around them. Text reads: “We’re the same, We’re the same, We’re the same.” The last phrase is written in rainbow colors.]

for some reason i can't stop thinking about how, after the cops cleared out hind's hall, they brought all the students one by one in front of news cameras, faced them towards the camera and ripped their masks off. i remember some, perhaps with genocidal parents, desperately trying to keep their heads angled down and away from the camera's gaze. some calmly stared it down. i only watched a few.

to me it symbolizes the essential unity of the repressive apparatus; the nominally independent media company and the equally nominally independent municipal police department uniting to keep the colonial machine going, no matter the cost, but there was also something almost pornographic in the unmasking. one wonders how many of the nypd officers ripping off the protestors' masks fantasized about doing the same to regular american civilians during the height of the pandemic.

Idk, I just feel like as mass culture gets more and more homogenous it’s actually not that shocking to run into people whose exposure to interesting art has gaping holes in it, it’s way better to give people the benefit of the doubt and share cool shit with them! Some of my favorite interactions over the past few years have been times I’ve shown people art I like. And some of that is super mainstream, some isn’t but I believe in its quality and want to have a conversation about it with people I know! It’s fun!!! Why do anything else…there will ALWAYS be someone cooler than you but there won’t always be someone who is an open book expressing interest in art you like.
