Just a reminder for people who may not know, in light of protestors at UCLA being shot in the face with rubber bullets— rubber bullets are not bullets made of rubber. They are metal bullets encased in rubber.

Despite being called “non-lethal” or sometimes “less lethal”, they are well known to cause death and permanent disability.

Here’s a photo showing their size— these are actual rubber bullets used during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.

Do not let them downplay the severity of what they are subjecting this students to for standing against genocide. Stay safe and stay educated.

the figures we were getting for the first few months were from the gaza health ministry, and they were to a high standard i.e. they weren't just going and counting bodies but were identifying the dead. With the total devastation of Gaza it's impossible for this work to continue, or for the ministry to function when its workers need to concentrate on getting food each day. This is why the number has stood still at 34,000 for so long. This is all obvious stuff; the fact that news media keep using this figure, generally without any caveat, is journalistic malpractice and complicity in genocide.

The truth is that we don't know how many are dead, because the organisations which could provide a count are not present in Gaza. Hundreds of thousands seems likely, especially when we take into account food shortages.

No one is discrediting the student protests. I myself am a student who is partaking in largely student-coordinated protests, drives, campaigns… but I also understand that we are largely missing the point if coverage of these protests overshadows what they are actually protesting for—the atrocities committed on Palestinians every single day. As the western buzz around this genocide gets more and more coverage, the coverage of the genocide itself sharply declines. It’s true and I see it every single day. Things are not being reported with the precision and diligence they should be.

Btw as all that is happening, Biden coincidentally happens to sign off 26 BILLION DOLLARS to Israel. The Washington Post broke it like 12 hours ago, but I had to wade through several articles to learn that the president of the US has given Israel his blessing to continue brutally massacring Palestinians.

It continues to be demonstrated with each saintly western figure people try to glorify at the expense of Palestinians: the buzz around this genocide is overshadowing the genocide itself. And I don’t find it a coincidence that this was done while everyone was outraged by all that’s been happening with the student protests.
