Electrical Safety Tips in Australia

We use electricity every day. From lights to heating up food, we depend on it. We cannot imagine living without it. But why is electricity so essential for our homes?

Electricity is an essential need for our homes because it is what powers a lot of the things we do in our daily lives. It helps us do our business, turns on lights, and even powers the TV or computer that we are using right now. Without electricity, life would be very different and much more difficult than it already is.

Even if there are lots of things electricity can do for us, if it is used for the wrong purposes, it can be very dangerous. There are many reasons why we should be safe around electricity. For example:

  • We should not use electrical appliances while they are wet or when they have a damaged cord.
  • We should not use electrical appliances in the bathtub or near water.
  • We should be careful of electric shocks and not allow children to play with electrical cords or plugs because they might get electrocuted.
  • If you are working with a circuit, such as a computer, use the ground wire to ensure that we do not get electrocuted by accidental electric shocks.

Any of these reasons can be avoided if you know a thing or two about electrical safety tips. And to give you a heads-up, here are some electrical safety tips commonly used in Australia.

1. Always turn off the power after working on any electrical appliance or device.

2. Never touch any appliance or device that is plugged in with wet hands or without having a dry cloth between your hand and the appliance.

3. Keep anything that could conduct electricity at least 3 feet away from water, including appliances, cords, and sinks (or bathtubs).

4. Never use a cord as a handle for carrying an appliance or device unless you are sure it will not get caught on anything and pull it down onto someone else or cause electric shock to anyone else in the room at the time of use.

5. When using an appliance or device, always make sure you have a firm grip on it and that the cord is not pinched between your hand and anything else, such as the sink or bathtub.

6. If you feel an appliance or device is getting too hot, remove it from your hands and test it later to see if is malfunctioning.

7. Do not touch a hot stove, oven or other cooking appliance with your bare hands; turn on the fan to circulate air in your kitchen while cooking and use a wooden spoon as a heat barrier between the hot object and your skin.

In order to ensure electrical safety, we need to make sure that we know how electricity works, how to stay safe when using electricity, how to identify faulty wiring or appliances, etc. Following these tips will help you to some extent to be safe.
