Why I Love Writing Plays #19: AUDIENCE

Even though writing a play on its own is dope, being able to share it with a bunch of people you don’t know is even DOPER! I remember when I was first starting out and was fortunate to get produced, I’d stand on the side of the stage, much like in this photo, and see how the audience vibed with what they were watching. Stuff like, “whew! they laughed there. Ooo, that person is sitting near the edge of their seat. Why is that homie sleeping? He high. Can I get some?” Luckily, I think I’ve gotten out of that “I wonder what the audience thinks at the EXACT MOMENT” and into just a good gratefulness that they are there and that I hope what I write isn’t a waste of their precious time. Knock on wood.
